Blockchain has spent a decade being either the future of everything or a complete waste of electricity, depending on who you ask. Both camps are usually arguing about price rather than technology. Here is the plain version — what the thing is, what it is good at, and which bits of it are actually a career skill.

What a blockchain is

Imagine a shared notebook that thousands of people each hold a copy of. When someone adds a line, everyone updates their copy, and every page is stamped in a way that makes it obvious if an earlier page was altered. That is a blockchain: a shared, append-only record that no single participant controls.

The clever part is not the storage, it is agreement. Getting strangers who do not trust each other to agree on one version of a record, without a bank or registry in the middle, is the actual invention. Everything else — coins, tokens, wallets — is built on top of that.

Why it exists

Traditional records need a trusted keeper: your bank holds your balance, Companies House holds the register, a platform holds your account. That works well and is usually cheaper. Blockchains matter in the narrower case where you cannot agree on a keeper — parties in different countries, competitors sharing a supply chain, or people who simply want a system nobody can quietly change.

Where it genuinely helps

  • Moving value across borders without a chain of correspondent banks and their fees.
  • Provenance — proving where a batch of goods, a diamond or a certificate came from, when several organisations must all trust the same record.
  • Programmable agreements (smart contracts) — escrow, royalties and payouts that execute automatically rather than waiting on an administrator.

Where it does not

If one organisation owns the data and everyone trusts it, a database is faster, cheaper and easier to fix. Most "blockchain for X" projects that quietly disappeared were solving a coordination problem that did not exist. Being able to say that in a meeting is itself a useful skill.

The vocabulary you need

Bitcoin is the first and simplest: mostly a ledger of who holds what. Ethereum added programmability, so people can deploy code that runs on the network. Wallet means a key pair, not a place where money sits — lose the key and the funds are unreachable, because there is no helpdesk. Gas is the fee paid to have the network run your transaction. Token is simply an entry in a smart contract's list of balances.

Learning the skills rather than gambling

The people making a steady living in this space are mostly developers, analysts and compliance specialists — not traders.
